Mary Mac – Hail Mary: The Tartan Songstress – Edinburgh Festival Fringe

Mary Mac – Hail Mary: The Tartan Songstress continues at Studio Two at Assembly George Square Studios until 30 August 2026.

Star rating: four stars ★ ★ ★ ★ ✩

Mary Mac is the ultimate Scottish drag queen who knows exactly how to deploy the title, combining cabaret, comedy and musical theatre with the easy confidence of someone who has spent years learning how to work a room.

Glasgow-born, gloriously tartan-wrapped and blessed with a genuinely spectacular voice, her impressive background includes Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre’s production of La Cage aux Folles, the UK tour of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, supporting RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Bianca Del Rio on tour, and cruise ship entertainment alongside Jane McDonald.

Although Hail Mary serves as her official Edinburgh Festival Fringe solo debut, the great pleasure of the evening is the warmth of the connection with the audience, as Mary doesn’t merely perform at the room but rather draws it into her world, moving from song to story and back again with the instinctive generosity of a seasoned cabaret artist.

While the voice can stop a crowd in its tracks, the evening truly works because the personality behind it is equally large, resulting in a show that is unapologetically Scottish, unapologetically drag, and unapologetically entertaining.
