Musical theatre royalty Michael Ball (Hairspray, Les Misérables, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) will step into another iconic role when he stars as Willy Wonka in a strictly limited London season of a major new production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – The Musical.
The double Olivier Award winner whose glittering career spans over four decades will take on the role of the ultimate chocolatier in the Made at Curve production when it plays the London Coliseum from 4 June 2027 to 18 September 2027.
Presented by ROYO, Fiery Angel, Gavin Kalin Productions and Curve, the production which is directed by Curve’s artistic director Nikolai Foster will arrive in London season following its highly anticipated Christmas season debut at Leicester Curve.
Foster leads a creative team that includes choreographer Ebony Molina, set designer Leslie Travers, costume designer Katrina Lindsey, lighting designer Ben Cracknell, sound designer Adam Fisher and video designer George Reeve (with illusions by Chris Fisher). Wigs, hair & make-up design is by Campbell Young Associates and puppets design and direction is by Rachael Canning.
The musical supervisor is Stephen Brooker, the orchestrations adaptor is George Dyer and the musical director is Isaac McCullough. Casting is by Olivia Laydon for Jill Green Casting, associate direction by Jordan Isaac and associate choreography by Dale White.
Inspired by Roald Dahl’s much-loved 1964 novel and featuring songs from the beloved 1971 film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – The Musical has a book by David Greig, with music by Marc Shaiman and lyrics by Shaiman and Scott Wittman. The musical premiered in the West End in 2013 with a production directed by Sam Mendes and made its Broadway debut in 2017.
