Andrew Lloyd Webber announces death of his composer son Nicholas Lloyd Webber

Andrew Lloyd Webber has announced the death of his eldest son Nicholas Lloyd Webber following an 18-month battle with gastric cancer.

Nick Lloyd Webber’s passing at the age of 43 came just a few days after his father had first revealed his son was critically ill in hospital.

Andrew Lloyd Webber confirmed his loss with a posting on social media: ‘I am shattered to have to announce that my beloved elder son Nick died a few hours ago in Basingstoke Hospital.

‘His whole family is gathered together and we are all totally bereft.’

A successful composer and record producer in his own right, Nick Lloyd Webber was known for his work on the TV drama Love, Lies and Records, Gillies McKinnon’s moving 2021 film The Last Bus and stage musical versions of the classic story The Little Prince and the popular TV series Fat Friends.

Announcing the Fat Friends musical in 2017, the TV show’s creator, Kay Mellor (who died in May 2022) paid tribute to the composer saying: “I’m blessed to have the opportunity to work with Nick Lloyd Webber who absolutely gets my characters and world. The musical is funny and sad with a big story and some meaty and memorable songs; together I think we’ve created something rather unique.”

At the age of just 14, Nick Lloyd Webber was the tape operator on ‘Sunset Boulevard: World Premiere Recording’, the album of the 1993 original London production of his father’s musical.

In 2021 Nick Lloyd Webber produced the ‘Andrew Lloyd Webber Symphonic Suites’ at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in London. He also co-produced and mixed the pre-production concept album for ALW’s Cinderella for Polydor Records, which went to number one in the official UK compilation album charts in July 2021. In 2022 he was nominated alongside his father, Greg Wells and David Zippel, for a Grammy Award for his work on the original cast album for the London premiere production of Cinderella.

Nick Lloyd Webber’s first musical was a theatrical and symphonic version of The Little Prince based on the book by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (co-written with James D. Reid), which premiered at the Lyric Theatre in Belfast.

The son of Andrew Lloyd Webber and his first wife Sarah Hughill, Nick Lloyd Webber is survived by his wife, musician Polly Wiltshire and two children.
