Auditions planned for The Time Traveller’s Wife

The much-anticipated stage musical adaptation of the bestselling novel The Time Traveller’s Wife is holding auditions to find three local children to play the role of Young Clare.

Due to premiere at Storyhouse in Chester ahead of a West End transfer, the production will hold the auditions on 25 July at 12 noon. Applicants should send in a video featuring their performance of a verse and chorus from a favourite pop song and a short poem or monologue. The video which should also include background information on why they want the role and any performance experience they might have. Tapes should be sent to kidsttw@gmail.com by 21 July 2022.

Based on Audrey Niffenegger’s acclaimed debut novel and the New Line Cinema film screenplay by Bruce Joel Rubin, the musical will play a two-week season in Chester from 30 September until 15 October before transferring to an, as yet, unnamed West End venue.

Featuring original music and lyrics by pop royalty Joss Stone and Dave Stewart and additional lyrics by Kait Kerrigan and a book by award-winning playwright Lauren Gunderson, the production will be directed by Bill Buckhurst and designed by Anna Fleische.

Announcing the local talent search, Buckhurst said: “The Time Traveller’s Wife centres around a time-travelling librarian, Henry DeTamble and Clare Abshire, a paper artist. They meet on one of Henry’s time-travelling episodes and later in the story they get married.

“During the show there are a few scenes where we meet Clare as a ten-year-old and we’re looking for a young, talented actor to play this role. The same actor would also play the role of Alba, who is the daughter of Henry and Clare (also 10 years old). We’re looking to meet actors between the ages of 11 and 16 for this role. They must have some acting experience, be confident singers and to be able to do a credible standard American accent.”

The creative team for the production also includes choreographer Shelley Maxwell, lighting designer Lucy Carter with illusions by Chris Fisher, video design by Andrjez Goulding, sound design by Richard Brooker, musical supervision and arrangement by Nick Finlow and orchestrations by Bryan Crook. Casting will be by Stuart Burt.

First published in 2003 The Time Traveller’s Wife was turned into a film starring Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams which was released in 2009. The story also recently provided the inspiration for a short-lived HBO TV series, starring Rose Leslie and Theo James.
