Record-breaking American stage and screen star Audra McDonald will return to London for four concerts in April at Leicester Square Theatre just over a year after her sell-out shows at the same venue.
The singer and actress who has won a string of awards including six Tonys, two Grammys and an Emmy Award, will take to the London stage once again on 12, 13, 14 and 15 April with a press night on 12 April.
Audra McDonald in Concert will feature the Broadway favourite on stage alongside host and pianist Seth Rudetsky, the writer and star of the musical Disaster! The shows will also feature special guest appearances by McDonald’s husband Will Swenson, the Tony nominated star of Hair and Priscilla Queen of the Desert.
Produced by Mark Cortale, the shows will feature a mix of behind-the-scenes stories prompted by Rudetsky’s light-hearted questioning and performances of some of McDonald’s biggest musical theatre hits.
The gifted soprano’s first London date in 15 years at the Leicester Square Theatre in January last year was named one of 2016’s Best Gigs of the Year by The Times reviewer Clive Davis.
Classically trained at New York’s prestigious Juilliard School, McDonald has appeared with some of the world’s most famous orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic and the Berlin Philharmonic. The singer’s glittering career has also included starring roles in many of Broadway’s biggest shows, a successful recording career and an incredible 17 performances at New York’s legendary Carnegie Hall.
McDonald holds the record for more Tony Best Performance wins than any other actor in history (The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, A Raisin in the Sun, Ragtime, Master Class, Carousel, Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill), and is the only person to win in all four acting categories.
The actress was due to star in the West End transfer of Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill last summer but the run was postponed when McDonald announced that she and Swenson were expecting a baby. Last October they became new parents to a baby girl.
