French-Canadian stage and screen star Audrey Brisson will take the title role in the critically acclaimed musical version of hit French film Amélie which will receive its UK premiere at Newbury’s Watermill Theatre in 2019 ahead of an extensive UK tour.
Directed by Michael Fentiman, Amélie The Musical is due debut at the distinctive Berkshire venue from 11 April until 18 May 2019 before heading out on the road from 20 May.
Commenting on her casting in the warm-hearted romantic comedy’s UK debut, Brisson (The Grinning Man, Bristol Old Vic) said: “Bonjour, je m’appelle Audrey Brisson et c’est avec un immense plaisir que je m’apprête à jouer le rôle d’Amelie Poulain. That is to say, I am really looking forward to sharing this journey filled with imagination and quirkiness that Amélie will concoct for us. Until then, à bientôt. (Have a raspberry on me!).”
Produced by Hartshorn-Hook Productions, Selladoor Productions, The Watermill Theatre and Broadway Asia, the UK tour will end in August 2019. The production will then tour internationally.
With music by Daniel Messé from alternative rock band Hem and lyrics by Messé and Nathan Tysen (co-writer of The Burnt Part Boys), Amélie The Musical was first staged in California in 2015.
Directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Guillaume Laurant, the original 2001 film Le Fabuleux Destin D’Amélie Poulain is to date the highest-grossing French language film released in the US.
Featuring Audrey Tatou in the title role, the whimsical tale of a woman who brings joy to those around her with secret acts of kindness, enchanted audiences across the world. The film won Best Film at the European Film Awards, it also won four César Awards and two BAFTAs and was nominated for five Oscars.
Recent Watermill Theatre success stories include inventive actor/musician versions of Sweet Charity, the classic George and Ira Gershwin musical Crazy For You and Twelfth Night.
