The Girls, Gary Barlow and Tim Firth’s musical version of The Calendar Girls story, is heading for the West End in January next year.
Barlow’s take on the inspirational story of the Rylstone Women’s Institute members’ headline-grabbing fundraiser, has been co-written with his childhood friend, Firth, the writer of the original award-winning film and stage versions of The Calendar Girls (the latter premiered at the Leeds Grand Theatre in November last year).
The story of the ladies who disrobed in the name of charity will be unveiled at London’s Phoenix Theatre in January 2017, with tickets going on sale from noon on 16 September.
Revealing details of the show’s London debut, a statement on Firth’s website attributed to Barlow and Firth read: “It’s been a little like tending a sunflower, from seeding it in Yorkshire to now seeing it bloom in London’s West End.”
The show, which played the Leeds Grand Theatre and the Lowry Theatre in Salford Quays, was produced by David Pugh and Dafydd Rogers and the Shubert Organisation and directed by Firth.
Casting and creative details for the show’s West End debut have yet to be announced.
