Just hours after celebrating success at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards the producers of the Best Musical Bat Out of Hell have revealed the hit show will be returning to London’s West End in 2018.

Following on from runs this year at the Manchester Opera House and the London Coliseum, the musical version of Jim Steinman’s rock classic record will open at the Dominion Theatre from 2 April 2018.

Tickets are already on sale for the initial booking period (2 April to 28 July 2018) for the show’s Dominion run and the production is also celebrating being nominated for eight WhatsOnStage Awards.

Four decades in the making, the theatrical incarnation of Steinman and Meat Loaf’s iconic rock album made its long-awaited debut in 2017 with a preview run at the Manchester Opera House before its official world premiere opening night at the London Coliseum on 20 June.

Directed by innovative theatre and opera director Jay Scheib, Bat Out 0f Hell – The Musical has a book by Steinman and Stuart Beattie, music and lyrics by Steinman, with choreography by Emma Portner, musical arrangements and supervision by Michael Reed, set design by Jon Bausor, costume design by Meentje Nielsen, video design by Finn Ross, lighting design by Patrick Woodroffe, sound design by Gareth Owen, orchestration by Steve Sidwell, casting by David Grindrod Associates and musical direction by Robert Emery.

Negotiations are ongoing to sign up the production’s original stars American actor Andrew Polec (the winner of the Joe Allen Best West End Debut in The Stage Debut Awards) and Christina Bennington. Further casting is to be announced.

The show is produced by David Sonenberg, Michael Cohl, Randy Lennox, Tony Smith, and in association with Bat Out of Hell Holding Limited.

One of the biggest selling albums of all time, the 1977 collaboration between songwriter Steinman and vocalist Meat Loaf, forms the basis for a major stage show.

Although the groundbreaking album was the inspiration for the new show, it will actually mark a return to the work’s original genre – musical theatre.

Conceived as a futuristic Peter Pan-style piece entitled Neverland, Steinman’s creation actually started life as a musical written for a workshop in 1974.

Although the piece was performed once at the Kennedy Center Music Theatre Lab three years later, Steinman and his friend Meat Loaf had already decided three of the show’s songs could form the basis for an album they hoped to record together.

Billed as a ‘romantic adventure about rebellious youth and passionate love’, the production features more than 20 of Steinman’s distinctive songs.

Steinman’s previous forays into musical theatre include his collaboration with Andrew Lloyd Webber on Whistle Down the Wind, and his musical Tanz der Vampire (Dance of the Vampire) based on Roman Polanski’s cult classic The Fearless Vampire Killers which was recently revived in Berlin, St Petersburg and Moscow.
