Following on from last year’s successful original cast album release, our choice for the Best Musical at the 2019 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Islander will feature on BBC Radio 4 on 22 January at 2.15pm.
Starring Olivier Award-winner Kirsty Findlay (Our Ladies of Perpetual Succour) and Bethany Tennick (a Stage Debut Award-nominee for her performance in the show’s Southwark Playhouse run), the two-hander debuted with a sold-out run in 2019 at Summerhall as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
Featuring a contemporary Scottish folk-flavoured score by award-winning composer, writer and singer-songwriter Finn Anderson and a book by Stewart Melton, the production played a successful three-week season at London’s Southwark Playhouse in October 2019.
Presented by Helen Milne Productions, the production which had been due to embark on tour last autumn was conceived and directed for the stage by Amy Draper.
Islander has been produced and directed for BBC Audio Drama North by Pauline Harris.
Commenting on his contribution to the show, Cameron Mackintosh resident composer Anderson said: “Creating the music for Islander was an exciting challenge. The score draws heavily on Scottish folk traditions, with raw a cappella vocals at its heart, but the use of the loop station allowed us to create a vast and fantastical theatrical soundscape with just two female voices.
“I’m always excited by how we marry tradition and innovation, and how centuries-old music and folk traditions can find new relevance through contemporary narratives and modern technology.”
