Jay McGuiness stars in Big the Musical
The musical based on the hit body swap movie Big has made its European debut ahead of a potential West End opening next year.
Big the Musical is playing the Theatre Royal Plymouth until Saturday (12 November) before transferring to Dublin’s Bord Gáis Energy Theatre for a Christmas run from 7 December until 7 January 2017.
The Wanted pop star and Strictly Come Dancing champion Jay McGuiness heads the cast as Josh Baskin, the boy who becomes magically trapped in the body of a grown man. He’s joined by Jessica Martin (Elf the Musical) as Josh’s mum, Diane Vickers (The Rocky Horror Show) as the woman who falls in love with the adult Josh, Gary Wilmot (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels) as toy tycoon George MacMillan and The Hoosiers’ Irwin Sparkes as Josh’s rival, toy company executive Paul.
Featuring songs by David Shire and Richard Maltby with a book by John Weidman, Big The Musical made its Broadway debut in 1996.
Based on the 1988 Penny Marshall film which earned its star Tom Hanks his first Oscar nomination, the stage show was nominated for five Tony awards despite playing only 196 performances. Two years later a revised version toured the US.
The show’s European debut is directed and choreographed by Morgan Young and is a Theatre Royal Plymouth production presented by Michael Rose and One World Shows in association with Bord Gáis Energy Theatre.
