Nearly three decades after its London debut, Sheldon Epps’ musical revue Blues in the Night will return to the capital for two concert performances next year.
Conceived by American stage and television director Epps, the celebration of the songs and singers most intrinsically linked with classic blues, will be performed at The Hippodrome Casino on Wednesday 7 June 2017.
Set in a run-down hotel in 1930s Chicago, the dialogue-free show is the story of three lovelorn women whose hearts have been broken by the same man.
Featuring genre classics include ‘Taking a Chance On Love’, ‘Wild Women Don’t Have the Blues’ and the song from which it takes its title, the two performances of the show will feature a live blues band.
Originally staged by Epps and the late Gregory Hines Off-Broadway in 1980, Blues in the Night was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Musical when it moved on to Broadway under the direction of Epps in 1982.
The show’s London debut production at the Donmar Warehouse in June 1987 transferred to the Piccadilly Theatre where it ran until July 1988. The Donmar version received Olivier Award nominations for Best New Musical and Best Actress in a Musical (Carol Woods).
Casting and further details of the Hippodrome shows will be announced early next year. Tickets will go on sale on Monday (22 November).
