Two big legends of entertainment are saying earlier-than anticipated farewells to Broadway in the annual thinning out that follows the Tony Awards.

Both King Kong and The Cher Show have announced a closing date of 18 August 2019. Neither show left the Tony Awards empty-handed, but the handful of trophies apparently was not enough to attract the necessary box office.

The Cher Show, the jukebox musical tracing the life of the titular star, won Tonys for its lead actress Stephanie J. Block and its Bob Mackie costumes. At closing, it will have played 34 previews and 296 regular performances. A national tour is scheduled to start in October 2020.

King Kong was presented with a non-competitive Tony for its puppet design. With its final curtain, it will rack up 29 previews and 324 regular performances. In the works are a Shanghai production for 2021, with a North American tour and other international productions in development.

The closing notices follow those already posted by two other musicals that premiered in the most recent season with open-end engagements, The Prom and Be More Chill. They are both set to shutter 11 August.
