The controversial new musical based on the life of Princess Diana will now premiere on Netflix ahead of its delayed Broadway opening in May next year.
Producers Grove Entertainment (Beth Williams), Frank Marshall and The Araca Group have announced that the show which had begin preview performances at the Longacre Theatre before the Covid-closedown, will now open on Broadway on 25 May 2021.
A performance of Diana will be filmed for Netflix at the Longacre Theatre without an audience in attendance. The performance will feature the original Broadway cast including Jeanna de Waal in the title role, Roe Hartrampf as Prince Charles, Erin Davie as Camilla Parker Bowles and double Tony Award-winner Judy Kaye as the Queen.
The cast also includes Zach Adkins, Tessa Alves, Ashley Andrews, Austen Danielle Bohmer, Holly Ann Butler, Stephen Carrasco, Bruce Dow, Richard Gatta, Lauren E.J. Hamilton, Emma Hearn, Shaye B. Hopkins, Andre Jordan, Gareth Keegan, Nathan Lucrezio, Tomǡs Matos, Chris Medlin, Laura Stracko and Bethany Ann Tesarck.
In a statement announcing the Netflix premiere of the show, the producers said: “We speak for the entire company when we say that we couldn’t be more excited to finally be able share our show with theatre lovers everywhere. Though there is no substitute for the live theatre, we are honoured to be a part of the quality entertainment that Netflix provides its subscribers worldwide.”
The musical which was due to receive its official world premiere on 31 March this year, has a book and lyrics by Tony Award-winner Joe DiPietro and music and lyrics by fellow Tony Award-winner David Bryan (the team behind hit musical Memphis). Directed by Tony Award-winner Christopher Ashley (Come From Away), the production is choreographed by Olivier Award-winner Kelly Devine (Come From Away), with music supervision and arrangements by Olivier Award-winner Ian Eisendrath (Come From Away).
