The Broadway musical version of hit teen film Bring It On will be one of three major musical productions for the British Theatre Academy’s 2018 summer season.
Joining the Tony-nominated tale of duelling cheerleaders in 2018, will be a revival of multi award-winning rock musical Spring Awakening and a new production of the record-breaking Chicago.
Commenting on the programme, British Theatre Academy producer Matthew Chandler said: “It has been an incredible year for the BTA and to date all our productions and concerts have given 1,500 children the chance to perform on the West End stage.
“For our last summer season, more than 2,000 young people auditioned for The Adventures of Pinocchio and over 1,000 teenagers for 13 The Musical, and we had three teams performing 13 The Musical.
“The summer season is a fantastic opportunity for all the youngsters involved. The search for talented young people under 25 will begin this month when auditions will be held.”
Following on from a production of the drama Goodnight Mister Tom, Bring It On will be the second of two British Theatre Academy productions to play Southwark Playhouse when it dances into The Large at Southwark Playhouse from 2 August to 1 September.
Written by Hamilton’s Lin-Manuel Miranda, Jeff Whitty (Avenue Q), Tom Kitt (Next to Normal) and Broadway lyricist Amanda Green (High Fidelity), Bring It On will be directed and choreographed by Ewan Jones.
Featuring music by Duncan Sheik and a book and lyrics by Steven Sater, the production of Spring Awakening at the Stockwell Playhouse (16-19 August) will be directed by Dean Johnson.
Closing the season (from Monday 24 to Friday 28 September) will be a production of the groundbreaking Chicago at the open-air Minack Theatre, the breathtaking external auditorium at Porthcumo near Land’s End in Cornwall.
Set up to give talented young people the opportunity to perform in top venues across the country, the British Theatre Academy’s recent West End productions of Annie Jr, The Secret Garden, The Adventures of Pinocchio and 13 – The Musical have all received positive reviews from audiences and critics.
In May 2017, the BTA staged a concert performance of Broadway musical The Color Purple, starring Dreamgirls’ Marisha Wallace alongside members of the BTA and in the summer of 2016 over 500 youngsters performed alongside musical theatre stars Kerry Ellis, Ramin Karimloo and George Maguire.
