Caroline, Or Change – West End run extended

Just weeks before the opening night of the eagerly-anticipated West End transfer of the Chichester Festival Theatre production of Caroline, Or Change, the show’s producers have announced a two-month extension to the Playhouse Theatre run.

Following sold-out runs at the Chichester Festival Theatre and London’s Hampstead Theatre, the production which features a critically-acclaimed central performance from Sharon D. Clarke will now play the Playhouse Theatre from 20 November until 6 April 2019.

The announcement of the extended booking period came in the same week as it was announced both the production and its leading lady were among the nominees for this year’s Evening Standard Theatre Awards.

Caroline, Or Change’s West End run will also feature two unique ticketing initiatives – the Prologue Scheme and the ‘Carolines Go Free’ offer.

The Chichester Festival Theatre’s successful Prologue scheme has been extended to the West End run with a limited number of £5 Prologue tickets available to audience members between the age of 16-25.

‘Carolines Go Free’ is an exclusive offer to anyone named Caroline who will receive a complimentary ticket when purchasing one or more accompanying tickets.

Rehearsals are already underway for the transfer run which will feature Olivier Award winner Clarke alongside Naana Agyei-Ampadu; Keisha Amponsa Banson; Alastair Brookshaw; Me’sha Bryan; Angela Caesar; Dujonna Gift-Simms; Sue Kelvin; Teddy Kempner; Ako Mitchell; Abiona Omonua; Vincent Pirillo; Tanisha Spring and Lauren Ward.

Cassiopeia Berkeley-Agyepong, Zalika Henry, Laura Medforth, Timothy Quinlan and Teddy Wills will also appear alongside nine young performers who will share the roles of Noah, Jackie and Joe. Isaac Forward, Aaron Gelkoff and Jack Meredith will alternate the role of Noah, Mark Mwangi, Kenya Sandy and Jeremiah Waysome will alternate the role of Jackie and the role of Joe will be alternated by Josiah Choto, David Dube and Raphael Higgins-Hume.

The musical which mixes blues, souls, Motown, classical music and Jewish folk song in a tale set in momentous times in 1960s Louisiana, features a book and lyrics by Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Tony Kushner (Angels in America) and music by Tony Award-winning Jeanine Tesori (Fun Home).

After premiering Off-Broadway in 2003 and arriving on Broadway in 2004, the original 2004 Broadway production of Caroline, Or Change was re-staged at the National Theatre in 2006 in a production which went on to win the Olivier Award for Best New Musical. Chichester’s version of the show was the first new UK production.

One of the highlights of artistic director Daniel Evans and executive director Rachel Tackley’s first season at the Chichester Festival Theatre in 2017, the production is directed by Michael Longhurst.

Presented by the Ambassador Theatre Group, Gavin Kalin Kalin Productions, Glass Half Full Productions and Rupert Gavin, the acclaimed production features design by Fly Davis, choreography by Ann Yee, musical direction by Nigel Lilley, lighting by Jack Knowles, and sound by Paul Arditti, with casting by Charlotte Sutton CDG and children’s casting by Debbie O’Brien.
