Casting has been confirmed for Chinonyerem Odimba’s critically-acclaimed Black Love – the opening production of the 2022 season at London’s Kiln Theatre.
Written by playwright Odimba, who also directs, the London-set family drama featuring music by Ben and Max Ringham will star Nicholle Cherrie (Jesus Christ Superstar, Regent’s Park Open Air), Beth Elliott (All the Little Lights, Barewater Productions) and Nathan Queeley-Dennis (A Taste of Honey, National Theatre).
Following a successful tour as part of Paines Plough’s Roundabout Season last year, Black Love will begin previews from 28 March 2022 ahead of an opening night on 1 April. The run will end on 23 April.
The creative team for the production includes designer Richard Kent, lighting designer Richard Howell, sound designer Joel Price, video designer Gillian Tan, casting director Jacob Sparrow, musical director Candida Caldicot, associate musical director Abdul Shyllon, costume supervisor Nathasha Ward and assistant director Kaleya Baxe.
Discussing the production Kiln’s artistic director Indhu Rubasingham said: “It is a pleasure to bring Black Love to the Kiln stage – it’s a beautiful, theatrical piece that will resonate with many. Chino, Katie, Ben and Max all met here in 2019, collaborating on our fabulous community play The Seven Ages of Patience. So, to have them back on their next collaboration feels very fitting, especially with this special show.”
Odimba, the artistic director of acclaimed theatre company tiata fahodzi, commented: “Working with Kiln Theatre and Paines Plough to bring this very special musical show back on stage is a wonderful opportunity for us at tiata fahodzi. Black Love has already engaged so many audiences across the UK in important conversations about family, joy, and race in contemporary Britain, and I can’t wait for more audiences in London to share the love!”
Paines Plough’s joint artistic director Katie Posner added: “We are so honoured to be once again collaborating with tiata fahodzi on this outstanding musical. The Kiln Theatre auditorium will be transformed into the round for the production which will be presented by Kiln Theatres, Paines Plough and tiata fahodzi.
