Robert Bathurst will star as Scrooge in the European premiere of Country Music Queen Dolly Parton’s seasonal show Smoky Mountain Christmas Carol – A New Musical in London this Christmas.
Presented by Fiery Angel Entertainment and Red Tail Entertainment, the re-working of Charles Dickens’ timeless tale is due to play the Southbank Centre’s Queen Elizabeth Hall from 8 December 2022 until 8 January 2023.
Stage and screen star Bathurst will appear alongside Halle Brown, Iona Fraser, Richard J Hunt, Vicki Lee Taylor, Olivier Award winner George Maguire, Ediz Mahmut, Sarah O’Connor, Christopher Parkinson, Minal Patel, Annie Southall, Carole Stennett, Danny Whitehead and Mitchell Zhangazha.
The role of Tiny Tim will be shared by Daniel Lee, Alexander Quinlan and Samuel Sturge. The children’s cast also includes Elliot Marsden, George Menezes Cutts and Dereke Oladele.
Smoky Mountain Christmas Carol is directed and choreographed by Alison Pollard, with musical direction by Andrew Hilton, set design by Scott Davis, costume design by Linda Roethke, props design by Eleanor Kahn, lighting design by David Howe and sound design by Richard Brooker. The assistant director and choreographer is Andrew Margerison, the associate musical director is Leigh Stanford Thompson and the associate sound designer is Kelsh Buckman Drudge. Casting is by Pearson Casting.
Announcing the London debut of her show earlier this year, Parton said: “Bringing our reimagined Charles Dickens classic to London feels like a homecoming. My songs weave the music of my beautiful Smoky Mountains into this timeless Christmas story, and I can’t wait for London audiences to hear them as we tell that story, set in a place that is truly special to me.”
Set during the 1930s in the Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee, Smoky Mountain Christmas Carol re-imagines Dickens’ classic creation Ebenezer Scrooge as the owner of a mining company town.
Adapted by David H. Bell, Paul T. Couch and Curt Wollan, the musical which has a book by Bell and features music and lyrics by Dolly Parton, premiered in Boston in 2019.
