Four local girls will share the central role of Susan Walker when Miracle on 34th Street: A Live Musical Radio Play provides the festive entertainment at the Town and Gown Theatre in Cambridge this month.
Lulu Bessa, Amalie Ham, Sophie Newhouse and Anika Pradeep will take turns to play Susan alongside Kerry Frater as Kris Kringle, Sam Carlyle as Susan’s mother Doris Walker and William Spencer as Fred Gailey. The production’s musical director Ralph Warman completes an ensemble that also includes Laura Cove and Anton Tweedale.
Directed by the Town and Gown Theatre’s manager Karl Steele, the production which is a re-working of the popular 2019 version of the classic Christmas story at his previous theatre The Old Joint Stock in Birmingham, will play the 100-seat Cambridge theatre space from 2-24 December 2021.
Adapted from the 1947 Lux Radio Theater presentation, Miracle on 34th Street: A Live Musical Radio Play was written by Lance Arthur Smith and features musical arrangements and original music by Jon Lorenz. The much-loved Christmas story is brought to life with four-part harmony performances of Christmas carols accompanied by live Foley effects to re-create the sounds of a traditional 1940s radio broadcast.
