Full casting has been announced for the actor-musician production of San Domino which is due to open at London’s Tristan Bates Theatre early next month.
Featuring a book and lyrics by Tim Anfilogoff and music by Alan Whittaker, the musical drama based on Mussolini’s infamous persecution of homosexuals in 1930s Spain previously previewed to a full house at Arcola Theatre’s Grimeborn Festival in 2014.
Directed by Matthew Gould, the new production will play the Covent Garden venue from Tuesday 5 to Saturday 30 June, with a press night on 7 June.
The cast includes: Hannah Genesius (A Christmas Carol, Barbican Theatre/BBC Radio 4); David Gibbons (Seasons of Larson, Lyric Theatre); Callum Hale (The Merry Wives of Windsor, RSC outdoor venue, The Dell); Matthew Hendrickson (San Domino, Arcola); Alexander Hulme (Split Ends, Phoenix Arts/Cockpit Theatre); Andrew Jardine (The English Heart, Etcetera Theatre); Christopher Laishley (Anyone Can Whistle, Union Theatre); Ross McKenna (making his professional debut); Grant Neal (Chicago, Adelphi, Cambridge and Garrick); Fergal Newton (making his professional debut); Roger Parkins (Next Time I’ll Sing To You, Orange Tree); Andrew Pepper (Assassins, Pleasance); and Mark Stewart (San Domino, Arcola).
The production’s creative team includes: musical direction and orchestrations by James Cleeve, lighting design by Mitchell Reeve, and design and costumes Faye Bradley.
Produced by TKD Productions and M. Green Productions, the musical tells the story of five men sentenced to five years confinement for ‘degeneracy’ on the island fortress of San Domino.
There will be four post show Q&As during the run: on 8 June the writers will be joined by Gianfranco Goretti and Tommaso Giartosio, the authors of La Cità e L’isola (The City and The Island), the history of Italian fascists’ imprisonment of homosexuals from Catania on San Domino.
Following the matinee performance on 9 June, the cast and creative team will take part in a Q&A hosted by the founder of WhatsOnStage.com, StageFaves.com and MyTheatreMates.com, Terri Paddock.
On Saturday 23 June, following the matinee performance, the cast and creative team will be joined by Sarah Day, the author of Mussolini’s Island and science writer for the Geological Society. The final Q&A on Tuesday 26 June with the cast and creative team will be hosted by Peter Tatchell, campaigner for human rights, democracy, global justice & LGBTI.
