Dublin-born musical theatre star Jacinta Whyte will return to the title role in the critically-acclaimed Irish production of Angela’s Ashes when it receives its UK premiere at Croydon’s Fairfield Halls in September.
Whyte will reprise her performance as Angela, alongside Eoin Cannon and Marty Maguire who will return to their roles as Frank and Malachy in the Thom Southerland-directed musical which will debut in the UK from 24 September until 5 October 2019. The press night will be on 25 September.
Commenting on the musical’s Croydon run, Southerland said: “I’m delighted that Angela’s Ashes is coming to the Fairfield Halls – my local theatre. We worked on the show two years ago in Ireland and did a small tour, but we’ve always had hopes and aspirations that it would come to the UK and I couldn’t be more pleased that it’s making its UK premiere in Croydon.”
The cast for the Croydon run will also include: Norma Sheahan as Mrs Finucane, Amanda Minihan as Grandma, Bryan Burroughs as Quasimodo, Connor Gormley as Malachy Jnr, Fiona Browne as Nora, Michael Joseph as Billy Heffernan, David O’Meara as Uncle Pat, Mark O’Regan as Mr Griffin, Brigid Shine as Theresa Carmody and Cáit Moloney as ensemble.
Southerland heads a creative team that includes set and costume designer Francis O’Connor and lighting designer Sinead McKenna, with movement direction by Ste Clough, and sound design by Jason Fallon. David Hayes is musical director and Mike Dixon is musical supervisor, with original arrangements and orchestrations by Colm Ó Foghlú and arrangements and orchestrations by Joe Csibi.
Based on Frank McCourt’s best-selling memoir, Angela’s Ashes – The Musical boasts music and lyrics by Adam Howell and a book by Paul Hurt. The musical version debuted at the Lime Tree Theatre in Limerick in 2017 before playing the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre, Dublin and the Grand Opera House, Belfast.
The Pulitzer Prize-winning story of the Irish/American writer’s family life in Limerick, Ireland was famously made into a film in 1999 by Alan Parker starring Emily Watson and Robert Carlisle as McCourt’s parents.
