The full cast has been unveiled for the UK premiere of Mark Sonnenblick’s Midnight at The Never Get at London’s Menier Chocolate Factory this summer.
As previously announced Tony, Emmy and Grammy Award winner Ben Platt (Dear Evan Hansen, Parade) will make his Menier stage debut in the starring role in the David Cromer-directed production.
Due to play a strictly limited season at Menier Chocolate Factory from 11 July to 12 September, the production will also feature Gregor Milne (Fiddler on the Roof, Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, Sunset Boulevard, Savoy Theatre) and Barry James who will return to the Menier after appearing in The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole Aged 13 ¾ The Musical and Little Shop of Horrors (also at Duke of York’s and the Ambassadors Theatres).
Commenting on his latest role earlier this year, Platt said: “I’m thrilled to be undertaking my first full run on the London stage at the Menier as it transforms into the nightclub setting of The Never Get. It’s truly wonderful to work with Mark, who is not only a genius songwriter, but who has also become a true friend. It’s a very special piece, my first wholly original musical since Dear Evan Hansen, and we look forward to working with the generationally talented David Cromer to create this singular experience.”
The Golden Globe and Grammy Award-winning creator of the musical, Mark Sonnenblick (KPop Demon Hunters) added: “This show means a tremendous amount to me and it’s a gift to collaborate with Ben again – he’s a once-in-a-generation performer. I can’t wait for audiences to experience his performance in the beautifully intimate theatre at the Menier. It’s also a huge privilege to work with the brilliant David Cromer as we realise the piece afresh for its UK premiere.”
Conceived by Sam Bolen, Max Friedman and Sonnenblick, the musical features set design by Scott Pask, costume designer Jonathan Lipman, lighting designer Heather Gilbert, sound designer Paul Groothuis and musical supervisor/orchestrator Andrew Resnick.
The UK premiere of Midnight at The Never Get, featuring a book, music and lyrics by Sonnenblick, is a 1960s-set tale of forbidden love in New York City. The show originally had a developmental run in Provincetown, Massachusetts in 2017 before playing an Off-Broadway run at York Theatre in 2018.
