Liam is joining the line-up for the UK premiere of Altar Boyz at the Greenwich Theatre from 3 October
The five boyz who will make the band line-up for the UK premiere of Altar Boyz have been revealed. The Off-Broadway show will have its UK premiere in a strictly limited run of 14 performances at Greenwich Theatre from Friday 3 October 2014 (press night is 8 October).
Playing band members Matthew, Mark, Luke, Juan and Abraham will be Liam Doyle, Jonny Fines, Jamie-Ray Hartshorne, Faisal Khodabukus and Alex Jordan-Mills.
Liam Doyle is currently starring as Fiyero in Wicked (UK tour). Other recent credits include Link Larkin in Hairspray (UK tour) and Troy in High School Musical. Jonny Fines’ credits include Lift (Soho Theatre), Avenue Q (UK tour) and The Sound of Music (UK tour). Jamie-Ray Hartshorne has appeared in the premiere of new musical The Prodigals (Belgrade Theatre) and The History Boys (National Theatre). Faisal Khodabukus’ recent credits include I Can’t Sing! (London Palladium), Dirty Dancing (UK tour) and La Cage Aux Folles (Playhouse Theatre). Alex Jordan-Mills played Billy in the 2013 revival of Taboo (Brixton Clubhouse), and most recently played Nick Piazza in Fame (UK tour).

This musical comedy is about a fictitious boy-band on the last night of their Raise the Praise tour. The Boyz are five all-singing, all-dancing heartthrobs – Matthew, Mark, Luke, Juan and Abraham – trying to save the world one screaming fan at a time. Their pious pop act – including lyrics like ‘Girl You Make Me Wanna Wait’ and ‘Jesus Called Me On My Cell Phone’ – worked wonders on the bingo hall circuit, but when fate brings them to New York, will the boyz take a bite out of the forbidden apple?
The award-winning and totally original musical has been described as ‘90 minutes of heavenly delight that is destined to rock the masses of all denominations!’
Altar Boyz will be directed by Steven Dexter, whose credits include Loserville in the West End and the world premiere of Stiles and Drewe’s Honk! at the Watermill Theatre. It is choreographed by Ewan Jones, who was recently associate choreographer on the world premiere of Water Babies at Curve Theatre, Leicester, with choreography credits including The Mikado at Hackney Empire. The musical director is Mark Crossland, whose credits include the UK tours of Dance Til Dawn, Sister Act, Hairspray and 9 to 5.
Altar Boyz is presented by Paul Taylor-Mills Ltd who recently produced the critically acclaimed production of In The Heights at Southwark Playhouse. Taylor-Mills said: “After the overwhelming success of In The Heights, Bare: the rock musical and our BroadwayWorld award-winning production of Rent, we are delighted to have been given the opportunity to present yet another premiere of an American import. I have been trying to secure a life for Altar Boyz for several years and am thrilled to be presenting it with one of the UK’s most accomplished directors of new musicals, Steven Dexter. He is so wonderfully imaginative and I’m thrilled with the cast he has assembled, to be announced soon.”
The musical has a book by Kevin Del Aguila, and music and lyrics by Gary Adler and Michael Patrick Walker. It is conceived by Marc Kessler and Ken Davenport, and is presented by arrangement with R&H Theatricals Europe.
