Casting has been confirmed for the upcoming London run of Nancy Medina’s acclaimed production of Tarell Alvin McCraney’s Tony-nominated Choir Boy.
First seen as part of Medina’s inaugural season as artistic director of the Bristol Old Vic, the first major UK revival of the gospel-flavoured coming-of-age story will play Stratford East from 26 March to 25 April.
The production’s original star Terique Jarrett (Motown The Musical, West End debut, Our Town, Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre) will reprise his Black British Theatre Award-winning performance as the central character Pharus. Michael Ahomka-Lindsay (Newsies, Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre, Legally Blonde, Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre) also returns as David alongside Daon Broni (Macbeth, Royal Exchange Manchester, The Observer, National Theatre) as Headmaster Marrow, Khalid Daley (Hamilton, Victoria Palace, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, UK and tour) as JR and Martin Turner (Anything Goes, Martin Guerre, both at the Prince Edward Theatre) as Mr Pendleton. They will be joined by Rabi Kondé (Clueless, West End) joins as Bobby with Freddie MacBruce (The Little Foxes, Young Vic Theatre) as AJ.
The creative team for the production also includes co-director Tatenda Shamiso, set and costume designer Max Johns, lighting designer Nao Nagai, musical director and arranger Femi Temowo, composer and sound designer Donato Wharton, movement director and intimacy co-ordinator Ingrid Mackinnon, voice and dialect coach Aundrea Fudge, casting director Julia Horan, associate movement director Ewa Emini, production manager Gemma Brooks, company stage manager Vanessa Sutherland, deputy stage manager Theodore Hung and assistant stage manager Emily Mei-Ling Pearce.
Choir Boy is presented by Stratford East and originally produced by Bristol Old Vic.
An Oscar-winner for the screen adaptation of his play Moonlight, McCraney’s Choir Boy premiered at London’s Royal Court Theatre in 2012 and debuted on Broadway in 2018.
