INSIDE VOICE – Christian Douglas (Available on Download)
Star rating: four stars ★ ★ ★ ★ ✩
Christian Douglas may be a name you haven’t heard of but he has a very distinctive voice that will have you hooked from the start. His album Inside Voice is a pandemic-inspired, self-penned exploration of being locked up inside day after day. I have to point out here, it isn’t a musical, more a musical journey through his feelings as the pandemic continued.
The album starts with a bluesy feel to it with ‘Stay Inside’ and progresses through ballad, pop and even a nod towards musical theatre and New Age, thanks to Becca Stevens’ haunting voice on Sonnet X.
Tracks: ‘Stay Inside’, ‘Through the Screen’, ‘Love Thy Neighbour’, ‘Tip of my Tongue’, ‘Sonnet X’ (ft Becca Stevens), ‘The Ocean’, ‘Simple Life’, ‘A Little Love’, ‘Square One’ and ‘Hold On’ (ft GQ).
Douglas’ voice at times reminds me of a young Chris Isaak. Very sultry and expressive. I have listened to this album a couple of times now – the last time was with a bottle of wine and the lights low – it is that sort of album.
