Charlie Stemp, the much-acclaimed star of Half a Sixpence (which transferred from Chichester Festival Theatre to the West End) is due to make his Broadway debut in the role of Barnaby Tucker in Hello, Dolly! from January 2018.

Stemp will join Bernadette Peters and Victor Garber, who be taking over the roles of Dolly Levi Gallagher and Horace Vandergelder from Bette Midler and David Hyde Pierce, in the Tony Award-winning production.

The new line-up will be in place from 20 January, with an official opening night of 22 February.

Currently in the role of Barnaby Tucker is Taylor Trensch who, it has been revealed, will be one of Ben Platt’s successors in Dear Evan Hansen.

Stemp, who has amassed quite a following after his triumph as Arthur Kipps in Half a Sixpence, will also fit in playing the title role in Palladium panto Dick Whittington before he travels across the pond.

Musical Theatre Review’s Susan Elkin wrote of Stemp’s performance in Half a Sixpence: “His joyful, nimble-footed, truthful, energetic performance is as appealing as anything Tommy Steele did in the Arthur Kipps role. He has a wonderfully warm smile and that rare knack of making a richly polished performance look as natural and effortless as breathing. His presence shines too. The word ‘star’ is overrated in the theatre industry but Stemp really does twinkle.”

The Broadway production of Hello, Dolly!, the show’s fourth resurrection on the Great White Way, is directed by Tony Award winner Jerry Zaks and choreographed by Warren Carlyle.

At this year’s Tony Awards Bette Midler, as was generally predicted, won Best Actress in a Musical, but Hello, Dolly! also won for Best Musical Revival, featured actor Gavin Creel and costume designer Santo Loquasto.
