Home viewers will get a second chance to enjoy Chichester Festival Theatre’s sold-out concert Celebrating Sondheim, an encore screening marking Stephen Sondheim’s 91st birthday on 22 March 2021.
Hosted by the popular venue’s artistic director Daniel Evans, the star-studded celebration of the music of the legendary composer featured Evans’ co-star for the London and Broadway revivals of Sunday in the Park with George, Jenna Russell, along with Chichester Festival Theatre favourites Clive Rowe (Me and My Girl), Hannah Waddingham (Kiss Me Kate) and one of the stars of the 2020 Concert in the Park, Gabrielle Brooks (The Wizard of Oz, Sheffield Crucible).
The encore stream will be at 7pm on 22 March and the concert will be available on demand until 25 March. Celebrating Sondheim, is part of a musical spring season from the Chichester Festival Theatre that includes episodes from the popular Facing The Music interview series featuring writer and broadcaster Edward Seckerson in conversation with some of the country’s most popular theatre stars.
The line-up includes:
Patricia Routledge (streamed as live on 24 February at 7pm) – A Chichester Festival Theatre favourite for over five decades, Routledge won a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her role in Darling of the Day on Broadway, and an Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical for Candide with Scottish Opera. Her many other musicals include The Pirates of Penzance, Leonard Bernstein’s 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in New York, and Carousel at the National Theatre.
Imelda Staunton (streamed as live, 3 March at 7pm) – Staunton received Olivier Awards for Best Actress in a Musical for her roles in Sweeney Todd and Gypsy (both of which transferred from Chichester to the West End) and Into The Woods. Her musical appearances also include The Beggar’s Opera, Guys and Dolls, The Wizard of Oz and, most recently, the National Theatre revival of Follies.
Giles Terera (streamed as live, 10 March at 7pm) – Terera won the 2018 Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical as Aaron Burr in the original London cast of Hamilton. His extensive musical credits include Avenue Q, The Book of Mormon and Rent in the West End, and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Candide and Honk! at the National Theatre. He appeared in Chichester’s Concert in the Park in 2020.
Philip Quast (streamed as live, 17 March at 7pm) – Quast is renowned for his interpretation of Javert in Les Misérables in Sydney and London. He has won three Olivier Awards for Best Actor in a Musical – for the original London production of Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park with George, Dempsey & Rowe’s The Fix, and the National Theatre production of South Pacific. His many other musicals include Evita, Mary Poppins, La Cage Aux Folles and Sweeney Todd.
The programme also includes an encore stream of the Sheila Hancock interview on 24 March at 7pm. The actress who was made a Dame this year has appeared at Chichester a number of times, most recently in This Is My Family in 2019. Hancock’s West End credits include Sister Act, Cabaret, Sweeney Todd and Annie.
