The producers of next month’s London transfer run of Sue Townsend’s The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole aged 13 ¾ – The Musical have unveiled the young cast who will take on the pivotal roles of Adrian, Pandora, Barry and Nigel.
With all child cast members aged between 12-14 years old, the title role will be shared by Nicholas Antoniou-Tibbitts from Westminster, Aaron Gelkoff from Redbridge, Michael Hawkins from Haringey and Rufus Kampa from Buckinghamshire.
The love of Adrian’s life, Pandora, will be played by Molly May Gibson from Kent, Matilda Hopkins from Buckinghamshire, Rebecca Nardin from Surrey and Riya Vyas from Richmond.
Jack Gale from Hertfordshire, Aaron Shaw from Hertfordshire, Charlie Stripp from West Sussex and Kobi Watson from Croydon will alternate the role of Barry, while Regan Garcia from Bexley, Albert Green from Buckinghamshire, Cuba Kamanu from Cambridge and Jeremiah Davan Waysome from Newham will alternate the role of Nigel. All children in the cast are between the ages of 12 to 14 years old.
Following the musical’s critically-acclaimed debut in Leicester in 2015 and the equally successful Menier Chocolate Factory run in Adrian’s 50th birthday year of 2017, the musical version of Sue Townsend’s much-loved tale of teen angst will play a limited season at London’s Ambassadors Theatre from 15 June until 12 October, with a Gala Night on 2 July.
The previously announced adult cast includes: Rosemary Ashe (The Witches of Eastwick, The Phantom of the Opera, West End) as Grandma, Lara Denning (Matilda, West End, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Theatre Royal Drury Lane) as Miss Elf/Doreen Slater, John Hopkins (The Boys in the Band, Park Theatre/Vaudeville, Much Ado About Nothing, Rose Theatre Kingston) as Mr Lucas/Mr Scruton, Andrew Langtree (Groundhog Day, The Old Vic, Troilus & Cressida, RSC) as George, Amy Ellen Richardson (Sweet Charity at Donmar Warehouse, Beautiful: The Carol King Musical UK tour) as Pauline, and Ian Talbot (Hairspray, Shaftesbury Theatre, Kiss Me Kate, BBC Proms) as Bert Baxtor. The cast also includes: Holly Ashton (Mamma Mia!, international tour, A Little Night Music, Frinton Summer Theatre) and Mathew Craig (Blood Brothers, UK tour, The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, Aged 13 ¾, Menier Chocolate Factory).
Set in 1980s Leicester, The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole aged 13 ¾ – The Musical features a book and lyrics by Jake Brunger and music and lyrics by Pippa Cleary, the production is directed by Luke Sheppard.
The creative team includes choreographer Rebecca Howell, set and costume designer Tom Rogers, lighting designer Howard Hudson, with musical direction by Mark Collins, musical supervision and orchestrations by Paul Herbert and children’s casting by Jo Hawes CDG.
Sue Townsend was one of Britain’s most popular and most loved writers, with over 10 million copies of her books sold in the UK alone. The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole aged 13 ¾ was her first novel, published by Penguin Books in 1980. Townsend’s creation captured the imagination of readers across the world selling over 20 million copies and translated into 30 languages.
