Christmas homecoming for the REP’s Nativity! The Musical

Much-loved Christmas show Nativity! The Musical will make its long-awaited return to its first home, the Birmingham Repertory Theatre, for the 2022/2023 Christmas season.

Postponed twice due to the pandemic, the successful stage version of the hit film Nativity! will now return to the venue where it debuted in 2017, two years later than planned for a spectacular seven-week run from 19 November 2022 until 7 January 2023.

Confirming the new dates, the REP’s artistic director, Sean Foley said: “We are especially delighted to finally welcome back Debbie Isitt’s spectacular and heart-warming hit show to her home city of Birmingham. Christmas is a special time for families to come together and Nativity! The Musical  provides the perfect theatre treat for all ages.”

The world premiere run of the musical version of the hit 2009 festive family tale of the ultimate school Nativity play made its debut at Birmingham Repertory Theatre in October 2017. Written and directed by the film’s creator Isitt with music and lyrics by Nicky Ager and Isitt, Nativity! The Musical quickly became a firm favourite with audiences across the country. Over a million people have seen the production since its debut at The Rep, with the show successful touring the UK and playing three crowd-pleasing runs in London.

Nativity! The Musical is presented by Birmingham Repertory Theatre in association with Jamie Wilson.

Already a staple of the Christmas TV schedules, the original film Nativity! starred a pre-Sherlock Martin Freeman as teacher Mr Maddens who reluctantly takes on the job of producing a musical Nativity with the help of the exuberant Mr Poppy and a host of enthusiastic kids.

Written and directed by BAFTA Award-winner Isitt and produced by Nick Jones, the film has spawned three sequels – Nativity 2 Danger in the Manger!, Nativity 3 Dude Where’s My Donkey?! and Nativity Rocks!
