Come Alive! The Greatest Showman Circus Spectacular is an absolutely delightful immersive experience, masterfully intertwining the enchanting magic of the circus with the unforgettable music from the beloved film starring Hugh Jackman, The Greatest Showman. This production brings to life the inspiring story of P.T. Barnum, who, against all odds, creates a vibrant spectacle that celebrates uniqueness and diversity, showcasing performers from all walks of life.
The cast is led by the charismatic Simon Bailey as The Showman, embodying the charm and ambition of Barnum, alongside the talented Aaliya Mai as Max, whose partnership adds depth to the narrative. Their performances are nothing short of mesmerising, capturing the spirit of the show’s message of embracing individuality and discovering the power of dreams.
The ensemble cast, including powerful vocalists like Jaz Ellington, Charlotte-Hannah Jones, Whitney Martins and Fallon Mondlane, breathe life into the film’s iconic songs, delivering performances that resonate with energy and emotion. Each number, from the uplifting ‘This is Me’ to the celebratory ‘Come Alive’, showcases their incredible singing prowess and stage presence.
Acrobats and clowns add an exhilarating dimension to the production, demonstrating astounding skills that keep the audience on the edge of their seats. The entire show is a thrilling blend of breathtaking acts and heartfelt performances, perfectly encapsulating the wonder of the circus. Standing out are French-born acrobat Tybald Griesbacher with his awe-inspiring teeterboard act and Antino Tisson Pansa, unbelievable on the slack rope. Clearly, these two are on a Cirque du Soleil level.
Directed by Simon Hammerstein, the production is a visual feast. The stunning costumes, stupendous acrobatics and vibrant atmosphere immerse the audience in a world of excitement and joy. The interactive pre-show experience enhances the fun, allowing audience members to engage with performers and enjoy delicious food and drink alongside them, before settling into the cosy 700-seat Big Top at the Empress Museum.
Music producer Matthew Brind, known for his work on Paddington 2 and Just For One Day, infuses the show with theatrical expertise, enhancing the great, hummable score of Benj Pasek and Justin Paul without trying to change it in any unnecessary ways. Choreographers Jerry Reeve and Lukas McFarlane create dazzling dance routines that elevate the entire performance beyond just a circus show. Adam Bassett’s lighting design, Ruby Law’s imaginative set design, Susan Kulkarni’s eye-catching costumes and Mika Handley’s art direction all contribute to the show’s stunning visual appeal as well.
A new, additional plot that strays a bit too far from the life of Barnum might be a weak point, but all in all, Come Alive! The Greatest Showman Circus Spectacular is not to be missed, not just for fans of the film but for anyone who loves the thrill of the circus. The show promises to leave you with a smile on your face and long-lasting cherished memories, at least until an actual stage musical version of The Greatest Showman comes along. Bravo to the entire cast and crew for putting together such a spectacular spectacle!
