The Tony Award-winning Broadway production of Come From Away has become the third high-profile show to announce its closure before the end of the year.
Irene Sankoff and David Hein’s Come From Away will take its final bow at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre on 2 October 2022, following on from the departure of Dear Evan Hansen on 18 September and Tina – The Tina Turner Musical which will bring the curtain down on its New York run on 14 August.
Come From Away celebrated its official opening night on Broadway on 12 March 2017. By the end of its run it will be the 49th longest-running production in Broadway history and the longest-running show at the 105-year-old Schoenfeld Theatre.
In a statement confirming the musical’s closure, the show’s producers said: “This journey, which started seven years ago, has exceeded every expectation we could have ever had for Come From Away. We are forever inspired by the unfailing generosity of the people of Newfoundland, and so grateful to the entire Come From Away Broadway family, onstage and off, many of whom have been with us since our world premiere at La Jolla Playhouse and Seattle Repertory Theatre.”
Inspired by the remarkable true story of the 7,000 stranded air passengers who found refuge in a small Canadian town in the immediate aftermath of the 9/11 terror attack, the multi-award-winning show celebrates man’s humanity at a time when the world was horrified by the depths of its inhumanity.
Dear Evan Hansen’s run will come to an end five years after the critic and crowd-pleasing show won the Tony Award for Best New Musical. Before the Covid-closure, the critic and crowd-pleasing show from Benj Pasek, Justin Paul and Steven Levenson was playing to packed houses, but ticket sales have reportedly fallen in recent weeks.
The West End production of Dear Evan Hansen will have its final London performance at the Noël Coward Theatre on 22 October 2022.
The Broadway production of TINA – The Tina Turner Musical opened at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in November 2019. In a message posted on the production’s website, the show’s superstar inspiration remarked: “To witness my story on the Broadway stage, created by the most talented artists, has been an incredible coda to a storied career.
“Looking back on opening night on Broadway almost three years ago and remembering the love and support I received from my friends and the Broadway community is an experience I will not soon forget. For this Nutbush, TN native, it was a homecoming long overdue and it has been an honour and a privilege to share this story with audiences across the globe.”
Following the final performance of TINA – The Tina Turner Musical on Broadway, the producers will launch a 30-city US tour, opening in Providence Rhode Island a month later on 14 September.
