A staged concert version of the multi award-winning Ragtime – The Musical is to play six performances in the heart of the City of London.
The amateur production from the Bishopgate Institute and Centre Stage London will feature the full, original Tony Award-winning score performed by 21 musicians and an onstage cast supported by an offstage choir.
Directed by Toby Hine with musical direction by Ben Ferguson and choreography by Lemington Ridley, the show will play the Bishopgate Institute near Liverpool Street Station from 14 until 19 June.
The cast includes: Michael Onabanjo-Whittaker, Sara Rajeswaran, Tasha Msanide, Michael Smith, Trudi Camilleri, Will Howells, Chris Hughes-Copping, Philip Doyle, Marsha Blake, Tal Hewitt, Masimba Ushe, Siobhan Aarons, Gabi Benton-Stace, Stephen Hewitt, Daisy Simpson, Daniel Haswell, Lauren Nixon, Lesley Birch, Lora Jones, Sean Westwood, Stephanie Da Silva Jardim and Basil Zafiropoulos.
Based on the 1975 novel Ragtime by E L Doctorow, Ragtime – The Musical features music by Stephen Flaherty, lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and book by Terrence McNally.
The show premiered in Toronto in 1997 before opening on Broadway the following year. The production ran for 834 performances winning the Tony Awards for Best Book, Best Original Score, Best Orchestrations and Best Featured Actress in a Musical (Audra McDonald).
A limited West End run followed in 2003 featuring an Olivier Award-winning performance from Maria Friedman. A re-imagined version was staged at the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre in 2012.
