Aria Entertainment and KT Producing will present the London premiere of the new Scottish folk musical Ballad Lines early next year.
Co-created by award-winning singer-songwriter Finn Anderson and award-winning director Tania Azevedo, the musical will make its London debut with an eight-week season at Southwark Playhouse Elephant from 23 January until 21 March 2026.
Weaving together new original songs with centuries-old traditional Scottish, Irish and Appalachian ballads performed by an all-female band, the musical follows three women – a 17th century Scottish minister’s wife, a teenager in 18th century Ireland and a present-day woman in New York re-discovering the songs of her heritage.
The musical started life in 2014, commissioned jointly by the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and Northwestern’s American Music Theatre Project. Developed through workshops in Chicago and concert showcases at MacRobert Arts Centre in Stirling, the musical received its critically acclaimed world premiere at Macrobert Arts Centre in 2023 under the show’s previous title A Mother’s Song.
Commenting on the musical, Anderson said: “Our ambition with Ballad Lines was to combine the raw, timeless power of folk music with the sweeping emotional drama of the musicals we both love. By reimagining traditional ballads through the lens of a modern-day queer relationship and fusing them with contemporary styles, we hope this show helps reclaim folk music as a space for diverse, intersectional storytelling — a space where more of us can see ourselves reflected.

Azevedo added: “Finn and I are thrilled to be bringing Ballad Lines to London after such a rich development journey. We wanted to make a piece that weaved together questions of ancestry, belonging and the legacy carried in our bodies with urgent themes of female autonomy and personal freedom. At its heart, it’s an epic story of beauty, and transatlantic drama, one that asks how we honour those who came before us while carving out the lives we choose today. I believe audiences will see themselves reflected in this musical, and I can’t wait to share it on stage.”
Ballad Lines features set design by TK Hay, music direction by Shonagh Murray, choreography by Tinovimbanashe Sibanda, lighting design by Simon Wilkinson and sound design by Andy Johnson. Eliza Beth Stevens is the assistant director, James Anderton is the production manager, Kristie Winsen is the general manager and Jane Deitch is the casting director. Ballad Lines is lead produced by Katy Lipson for Aria Entertainment and Kate Taylor for KT Producing and co-produced with Wolk Transfer Company and TRW Production.
A 17-track concept album for the musical will be launched with a special concert at Cottiers in Glasgow on 15 September.
The album features Olivier Award-winning actress Rebecca Trehearn (Show Boat, New London Theatre), Frances McNamee (Girl From the North Country, UK/Ireland tour), Olivier Award-nominee Kirsty Findlay (Our Ladies of Perpetual Succour, Duke of York’s Theatre), Amber Sylvia Edwards (TINA: The Tina Turner Musical, Aldwych), award-winning Danielle Fiamanya (The Color Purple, Curve Leicester/Birmingham Hippodrome Theatre), ITV’s Mamma Mia! I Have a Dream finalist Owen Johnston (Miss Saigon, UK tour), Parisa Shahmir (Jesus Christ Superstar, Watermill Theatre) and Dylan Wood (Hadestown, West End).
The musical theatre stars appear alongside Scottish and North American guest artists including Gaelic Singer of the Year Kim Carnie, JUNO Award-winning banjo player Kaia Kater, four-time BBC Alba Scots Singer of the Year Siobhan Miller and Celtic Connections festival regular, Beth Malcom.
The album’s all-female band is made up of one of Scotland’s foremost acoustic guitarists Anna Massie, renowned Highland fiddle player Laura Wilkie, electric guitarist Jenny Clifford, bassist Charlotte Printer and Scottish-Icelandic percussionist and drummer Signy Jakobsdottir.
The new album includes new arrangements of traditional ballads like ‘Handsome Molly’, ‘The Four Marys’ and ‘Let No Man Steal Your Thyme’ alongside 14 original songs by Anderson. The musicians on the album come from a diverse range of folk, roots, pop, rock and alternative music scenes.
The music from Ballad Lines was recorded and released with funding from the National Lottery through Creative Scotland. The album is co-produced and engineered by David Macfarlane with additional engineering by Ru Lemer and Kevin Burleigh, and mastered by Lauren Gilmour at Novasound.
