The real strength of this production is that the performer is totally in control, which makes everyone feel they are in safe hands, that is until he starts describing how he bumps us off…
With an original book, lyrics and score by Sam Hooper and Robert Tripolino we are shown the nerve centre of his procedures. It’s a glum, grim unimaginative place, piled high with storage boxes filled to the brim with unimaginable descriptions of every human being’s demise or death. It’s a salutary lesson just exactly how much thought and sheer effort the Grim Reaper puts in; no wonder he feels utterly neglected. He deliberates as to why not one person on earth appreciates all the trouble he takes, agonising over every detail of each and every death he executes.
Hooper is a ball of energy, expressing through song, contemporary dance and convincing witty lyrics just exactly how he is going to end us.
In the safe hands of director Gabrielle Scawthorn, there are no ‘dead’ moments, each death is succinctly wrapped up and the momentum continues until the final scene.
This is dark comedy at its best, and if you have a stomach for the macabre, this is the show for you. To be honest, I was glad to get out alive!
