Double Olivier Award-winning illusionist Derren Brown has expressed his delight at the results of his challenge to The Showstoppers to compose a musical theatre song in just 24 hours.
The latest star to put The Showstoppers to the test had asked the team to create a song inspired by the difficulties of dealing with his heavily moulting Beagle/Bassett cross Doodle during lockdown. The song was to be sung in the style of Miss Saigon and/or Songs of Praise.
Tweeting his response to the finished song ‘Why Her’, Brown posted: “Wow, thank you Showstoppers, this is wonderful. I’m blown away. Made my lockdown. And Doodle/poodle, of course, it makes sense! Humbug’s kicking off already she didn’t get one. I’m going to watch it again 16 times!”
The cast who rose to the challenge this week were Adam Meggido with Justin Brett, Joshua Jackson and Ali James. The music was written by Meggido and Duncan Walsh Atkins with keys and track programming by Walsh Atkins and video editing by Andrew Pugsley.
The Showstoppers have set up a JustGiving charity page for the Care Workers Fund (supporting current and former care workers by providing crisis grants) and have asked those who are enjoying the songs and videos they have created to donate HERE.
Created by Meggido and Dylan Emery, the Showstopper formula involves taking individual suggestions from each night’s audience and turning them into a brand new fully choreographed and scored musical.
Featuring a rotating company, the improvised musical theatre show was founded in London in 2008 and has proved to be a hit with audiences around the world. An Edinburgh Fringe favourite for 12 years, The Showstoppers have featured in their own BBC Radio 4 series and played to packed houses in the West End.
