Very fast, very “French” and very funny – this is a riot from the second you step into the bubble and expect to be flirted with till you blush. No conventional announcement before the show – in fact, taking of photos and video are encouraged, provided they are posted online, with the hashtag #slightlyisolated/#aslightlyisolateddog (go on – have a look!).
There is a generous dollop of audience involvement in this show; so much so that there needs to be a rock-solid foundation to allow the free play with unpredictable participants. A Slightly Isolated Dog has nailed it – totally secure in knowing where to go next and how to get there. This is an absolute riot, kept fresh by the life-blood of the audience. We’re part of the team.
The raunchy tale of Don Juan is told in a series of vignettes, interspersed with songs so varied and amusing there is a pace, energy and exuberance rarely found.
Theatrical, musical and down-right clever, the hour with this ‘Gangsta’ Don Juan simply flies by. Although the company numbers just three men and two women, it feels like a cast of 20 is onstage. Particularly impressive is the storm sequence: a delight that the audience makes possible.
The whiplash reaction to Don Juan’s name; the beat-box for a ‘voice’; the wit in the lyrics and variety in the music make this a sure-fire Edinburgh hit and deserves to travel far and wide from here.
