The Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2013 is up and running, here’s the second of a number of updates about musicals and cabarets being staged at the international event.
Get Got

Presented by Janski Productions, Get Got is an American satire that allows audiences to be immersed in a live-television show experience, as the show’s host Preston Quick (Broadway’s Patrick Ryan Sullivan) undergoes a professional and emotional breakdown amidst a washed-up pop star (TV’s Angela Lonsdale) and a young teenybopper princess (Sophie Isaacs).
The musical is directed by Dominic Shaw. The piece won Best Musical at New York’s Midtown International Theatre Festival under its then title That’s Showbiz! in 2009. Now, with new score, book and lyrics and great persistence from producer and writer Colin Chaston, musical director Charles Czarnecki, composer Nick Messitte and writer Stephen Faulkner, Get Got has finally arrived in Edinburgh.

Hungry Bitches Productions has returned to the Edinburgh Fringe with their award-winning new musical Facehunters. Part coming of age story, part satire and entirely musical, the show’s band and cast are, according to the Sunday Times, “as drilled as any West End rock musical”.
With a techno-trance-punk rock soundtrack (music, book and lyrics are by Graham Mercer), the show claims to give a well-deserved kick up the backside to the musical theatre genre. The story focuses on the liberated lives of six friends in the enviably fashionable East End of London. But all is not well with these pleasure-hungry hipster-socialites, especially heroines Katherine and Juliette, who once exchanged their souls for eternal youth and beauty in a Faustian pact. When Katherine falls in love with another woman, their worlds begin to fall apart. Juliette becomes mad with jealousy and their friends slowly begin to succumb to the demons which threaten to destroy them all.
Leeds-based company The Hungry Bitches aims to manipulate traditional theatrical conventions to create fresh and original work (‘If you don’t like musicals’ says the pre-publicity,‘ you’ll love this one.’) Playwright Mark Ravenhill commented: “’This show is like watching the cast of Glee high on mascara and bile. Buy a ticket and throw used notes at the stage – they’re hungry!”
Facehunters has won the the Cameron Mackintosh Award for Musical Theatre and the recent Search For a Twitter Composer @westendproducer contest.

Chaucer: Hold Up Your Tale
6–10 August, C Nova – Studio 1 (Venue 145)
N10 Productions presents its world premiere of this original musical adaptation of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. The company returns to the Edinburgh Fringe for the third time, following the five-star 2010 success of Virtuous Flock and its sell-out transfer to London’s Arcola Theatre. In 2009, N10 Productions was selected as the Guardian’s Fringe ‘top ticket’ for Don Juan in Soho.
Chaucer: Hold Up Your Tale is a touching story that follows a feuding family on their emotional journey to seek solace and harmony. The timeless tales of the Prioress, Pardoner, Franklin and Knight are interwoven through live music, movement, puppetry and song.
N10 Productions was formed by producer/director Lauren Overs and is based in London’s N10 (Muswell Hill). The company is committed to developing a wide range of theatrical experiences from devised and physical theatre to original reinterpretations of classic texts. Artistic director Lauren Overs adds: “The ensemble has written a fresh and relevant version of this well-loved book and the piece is enhanced by delightfully lyrical melodies.”
