Emerging Artists – catch the latest show at Crazy Coqs

Emerging Artists flyer“Despite the financial rewards of a West End hit, there are still relatively few avenues for new musical theatre writers to showcase their new work. Thankfully Simon Greiff has recognised this need and created Emerging Artists at the Crazy Coqs in central London. Picking up the late night slot at the popular cabaret venue, Emerging Artists offers to introduce regular cabaret customers to new work and sound out audiences with songs in progress.”

That was how our reviewer Paul Vale described the first Emerging Artists season and on Saturday 7 June at 10.30pm the latest show of the series will take place at London’s Crazy Coqs. On this occasion, the line-up will be songwriters and musical theatre writers Victoria Saxton and Christopher J Orton, plus young soprano Ffion Lavery.

Actor, composer and lyricist Christopher J Orton’s musical Grace Notes (with lyricist Robert Gould) was recently part of The New Musical Theatre Project at the Leicester Square Theatre and he was also a finalist in the West End Producer’s Search For a Twitter Composer. He has written another musical with Gould entitled My Land’s Shore and there is hope for a professional production soon.

Librettist/lyricist Victoria Saxton is currently working on a commission with composer Charles Miller for the London School of Musical Theatre and leads a course on musical theatre writing at the Royal Central School of Speech & Drama.

The evening will also feature guest singers Kelly-Anne Gower, Rebecca Trehearn, Claire Hutchinson and Anthony Hughes (subject to availability).

Simon Greiff for SimG Productions, in association with the Crazy Coqs, has presented the Emerging Artists season. Following last November’s successful launch (as part of the inaugural London Festival of Cabaret), Emerging Artists returned for three nights. This season has featured emerging British-based writers and performers presenting original work in their own unique way. Each evening has introduced a new talent from the world of songwriting and musical theatre writing.

Musical Theatre Review said of the Emerging Artists season as part of the London Festival of Cabaret: “The talent on display was both encouraging and extremely diverse…  Talent, passion, humour and a sense of adventure summed up these emerging writers, proving that the future of the Great British Songbook is in good hands.”
