Emma Rice’s new adaptation of Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights will arrive at the National Theatre next month ahead of a UK tour.
Co-produced by the National Theatre, Bristol Old Vic and York Theatre Royal and also directed by Rice, the re-imagining of the classic story which debuted at the Bristol Old Vic in October 2021 will play the Lyttelton Theatre from 3 February until 19 March 2022.
Ash Hunter (Hamilton, Victoria Palace Theatre) stars as Heathcliff opposite Lucy McCormick (Life:LIVE! Battersea Arts Centre) as Cathy with Sam Archer (Wise Children, The Old Vic/UK tour) as Lockwood/Edgar Linton, Nandi Bhebhe (Baghdad Café, The Old Vic) as The Moor, TJ Holmes (One Man. Two Guvnors UK tour) as Robert), Craig Johnson (The Secret Garden, Minack Theatre) as Mr Earnshaw/Dr Kenneth, Jordan Laviniere (Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, Apollo Theatre) as John, Kandaka Moore (Baghdad Café, The Old Vic) as Zillah, Katy Owen (Wise Children, The Old Vic/UK tour) as Isabella Linton/Linton Heathcliff, Tama Phethean (Night of the Living Dead Live, Pleasance Theatre) as Hindley Earnshaw/Hareton Earnshaw) and Witney White (Dusty, Charing Cross Theatre) as Frances Earnshaw/Young Cathy). The musicians are Sid Goldsmith, Nadine Lee and Renell Shaw.
Following the Lyttelton Theatre run, the show tours to Hall for Cornwall, Norwich Theatre Royal, Theatre Royal Nottingham, The Lowry in Manchester, Sunderland Empire and King’s Theatre, Edinburgh. More dates will be announced soon.
Commenting on the production last year, multi-award-winner Rice said: “It is with an earthy spring in my step and epic twinkle in my eye that I announce our new plans for Wuthering Heights. So many projects have fallen by the wayside during lockdown that there were times when I lost hope – but there was no need!
“Wise Children are back; stronger, wiser and grateful for the chance to sing and dance again. The exceptional cast, crew, administrative and creative teams are ready to go and we are fizzing with ideas, dreams and anticipation. Emboldened and humbled by the enforced break, I feel truly lucky. I cannot wait to get back to doing what I love most and to share this thrilling and important piece with the world. It’s time.”
The production’s creative team includes set and costume designer Vicki Mortimer, with sound and video design by Simon Baker, composition by Ian Ross, movement and choreography by Etta Murfitt, and lighting design by Jai Morjaria.
Created and led by Rice, Wise Children launched in April 2018 and is an Arts Council England National Portfolio organisation. Previous hit productions include Rice’s adaptation of Angela Carter’s Wise Children and Enid Blyton’s Malory Towers.
