London’s Charing Cross Theatre will be the setting for the English language premiere of an acclaimed musical inspired by Daphne Du Maurier’s classic novel Rebecca.
Written by two of the most successful German-language musical theatre composers, Michael Kunze and Sylvester Levay, and featuring a new English translation by Christopher Hampton and Kunze, Rebecca will make its debut at the Charing Cross Theatre from 4 September until 18 November 2023.
Featuring an 18-strong orchestra, the new production will be directed by Alejandro Bonatto, the director of the recent critically acclaimed Charing Cross Theatre production of Donizetti’s Rita and the upcoming production of Francis Poulac and Jean Cocteau’s The Human Voice at the venue later this month.

Featuring 22 original songs, Rebecca received its world premiere at the VBW theatre Raimund Theater in Vienna, Austria in 2006 where it played three seasons of sold-out performances. The musical is currently enjoying a successful revival at the venue.
Produced by Austrian company VBW, and based on Du Maurier’s enduringly popular 1938 novel, the musical has been seen by over two million people in 12 countries and has been performed in 10 languages.
