There will be a new Dawn in the London production of hit Broadway show Waitress at the Adelphi Theatre from 25 January 2020 when Evelyn Hoskins steps into the role following the departure of current Dawn, Hannah Tointon.
Hoskins, whose musical theatre credentials include playing the title role in Carrie at the Southwark Playhouse and starring in Cruel Intentions at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival, will make her debut in the show just weeks after original London cast member Marisha Wallace returns to the role of Becky.
Wallace (Dreamgirls, Savoy Theatre) will be back as Becky from 6 January 2020 following Sandra Marvin’s final performance in the show which will also welcome new ensemble member Monique Ashe-Palmer (Madagascar The Musical UK tour) from 9 January 2020, taking over from Cindy Belliot.
Wallace and Ashe-Palmer will join current lead cast members Lucie Jones (Jenna), Hannah Tointon (Dawn), David Hunter (Dr Pomatter), Tamlyn Henderson (Earl) and Andrew Boyer as Old Joe.
Hoskins’ debut in the show which recently received nominations for seven WhatsOnStage Awards will coincide with the arrival of co-creator Sara Bareilles who will join the show to reprise her Broadway debut performance as Jenna alongside her Dr Pomatter Gavin Creel from 27 January until 7 March 2020.
Currently booking until 4 July 2020 before embarking on a major UK tour, the first major West End musical to boast an all-female creative team features a book by Jessie Nelson and music and lyrics by Bareilles. The production is directed by Tony Award-winning director Diana Paulus with choreography by Lorin Latarro.
Based on the 2007 film Waitress, the musical tale of love friendship and perfect pies opened on Broadway in 2016. A hit with audiences and critics, the show was nominated for four Outer Critics’ Circle Awards, including Outstanding New Broadway Musical; two Drama League Award nominations, including Outstanding Production of a Broadway or Off-Broadway Musical; six Drama Desk nominations, including Outstanding Musical; and four Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical.
Waitress began previews in August 2015 at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts, it transferred to Broadway’s Brooks Atkinson Theatre in March 2016. The show is currently in the middle of a successful US tour and plans were recently announced for an Australian premiere production at the Sydney Lyric Theatre in 2020. Further productions will also open in Holland in 2020 and in Japan in 2021.
