Home-bound theatre-lovers will get another chance to see the hit West End production of Sasha Regan’s award-winning all-male version of Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance this Christmas.
Recorded live at the Palace Theatre on 13 December 2020, The Pirates of Penzance will available on demand on via Stream Theatre from 23 December 2021 until 2 January 2022.
Regan directed and co-produced the production which starred: Oliver Savile, Alan Richardson, David McKechnie, Michael Burgen, Leon Craig, Lee Greenaway, Benjamin Vivian-Jones, Daniel Miles, Jamie Chidzey, Joel Elferink, Tom Duern, Matthew Facchino, Dominic Harbison, Tom Senior, Richard Russell Edwards, Sam Kipling and Marc Akinfolarin.
Over a decade since Regan’s innovative production debuted at London’s Union Theatre, the critically-acclaimed re-imagining of one of librettist W.S. Gilbert and composer Arthur Sullivan’s most enduringly popular works sailed into the original home of Gilbert and Sullivan, the Royal English Opera House (founded by Richard D’Oyly Carte in the early 1800s) – the present-day Palace Theatre – in W.S. Gilbert’s 184th birthday year.
Co-produced by Ben De Wynter for HMS2020 Productions, the production was choreographed by Lizzi Gee and associate choreographer Lee Greenaway, with musical direction by Richard Baker, design by Robyn Wilson Owen, and lighting design by Ben Bull. Casting was by Adam Braham Casting with marketing and public relations by Fiona Lockley.
Following a debut run at the Union Theatre in 2009, the show played sold-out runs at Wilton’s Music Hall and Hackney Empire before heading to Australia for a major tour and then returning for a UK tour in 2015. A new production played a sold-out run at Wilton’s Music Hall in 2019.
