Initial casting has been announced for the upcoming revival and Scottish premiere of Once – the opening production in Alan Cumming’s inaugural season as artistic director of the Pitlochry Festival Theatre.
Running from 23 May to 27 June, the production will feature Dylan Wood (Hadestown, West End, No Love Songs, Dundee Rep) and Lydia White (The Girl from the North, The Old Vic, Matilda the Musical, Cambridge Theatre) as the central characters, the Guy and the Girl.
Part of the celebrated Scottish Highland theatre’s 75th anniversary celebrations, the production will reunite the musical’s original Broadway and West End creative team led by director John Tiffany.
Commenting on the production, Tiffany said: “I am thrilled that the Scottish premiere of Once will also open Alan Cumming’s inaugural season at Pitlochry Festival Theatre; both Once and Alan are very close to my heart. We first created Once in Cambridge, Massachusetts followed by productions on Broadway, in the West End and around the world. Bringing it to Scotland, the place which has inspired so much of my work, feels like bringing it home.”
The original Tony Award-winning creative team also includes designer Bob Crowley (Mary Poppins, Broadway/West End), choreographer Steven Hoggett (Hamlet, Royal Shakespeare Company), lighting designer Natasha Katz (Aladdin, Broadway/West End), music and orchestration director Martin Lowe (Our Ladies of Perpetual Succour, National Theatre of Scotland) and sound designer Clive Goodwin (The Glass Menagerie, Broadway). The production’s casting director is Stuart Burt.
Based on the cult favourite 2007 film which was written and directed by John Carney, the musical version of Once also features music and lyrics by original writers Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová, including the Oscar-winning song ‘Falling Slowly’. With a book by Edna Walsh, Once premiered on Broadway in 2012 with a production which received 11 Tony Award nominations, winning eight including Best Musical.
