The management of Cambridge’s Town and Gown Pub & Theatre have released a first look at the interior of the new venue which will open its doors for the first time on 15 September 2020 ahead of the first theatre performances at the multi-purpose venue in October.
Originally due to launch in April this year, the fringe theatre space within the 1866 building which once housed Cambridge’s Arts Cinema is due to begin hosting performances with socially distancing measures in place on 10 October.
Unveiling the images of the venue, the Town and Gown Theatre manager, Karl Steele said: “We are thrilled and really proud to be opening a new venue during these difficult times rather than closing one. The hospitality and theatre industry is taking a massive punch at the moment and we are doing everything we can to reignite some movement in our industries.”
Aimed at showcasing the best of UK touring fringe theatre, cabaret, new writing and musical theatre, the 110-audience capacity space on the top floor of the building has been designed to allow for performances in the round and in thrust, traverse and end-on formations.
A long-term champion of fringe theatre and small-scale productions, the venue is Steele’s latest venture following on from his successful Old Joint Stock Theatre in Birmingham.
