Aria Entertainment has revealed the seven new musicals chosen for this year’s From Page To Stage festival which will play the Southwark Playhouse in September 2018.
Returning for its sixth year and running from 10 until 25 September, the musical theatre event created by leading independent theatre company Aria, will feature staged readings and showcase performances of new works selected from over 150 entries submitted by writers from across the UK and internationally.
The pieces chosen for staged readings will be: the Dickens-inspired The Astonishing Times of Timothy Cratchit with music and lyrics by Andre Catrini and book by Allan Knee; musical comedy Cult! with music and lyrics by Tasha Taylor Johnson; and Richard Rodgers Award-winning To Paint the Earth with music by Jonathan Portera and lyrics by Daniel Frederick Levin.
The remaining four musicals, which will be performed as 25-minute extracts as part of the showcase evenings, are: Drew Dillon’s Villages featuring songs inspired by famous LGBT venues on both sides of the Atlantic; Benjamin Button, based on the short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald and with music by Natalie Tenenbaum and lyrics by Brett Boles; period drama with a contemporary edge Smoke (book by Darren Rapier and music and lyrics by Sam Hall); and Never Change, a story of family with music and lyrics by Nick Barstow and Jonathan Kirwin.
Commenting on this year’s line-up, producer Katy Lipson from Aria Entertainment said: “As always we have had a wonderful two months reading and listening to over 150 submissions of new musicals from around the world! I am extremely proud of the seven shows we have selected for From Page To Stage this year and we will present them in a reading or showcase format. We look forward to welcoming audiences in to see these shows on stage at the very start of their theatrical journey.”
Alongside From Page To Stage 2018 in London, Aria Entertainment also launched From Page To Stage North West earlier this year.
The latest development in the successful ongoing partnership between London based Aria and Manchester’s Hope Mill Theatre, offers one writing team a full writing commission of an original musical.
From Page To Stage is supported by Cameron Mackintosh, RnH Theatricals, Theatrical Rights Worldwide and Anthony Field Associates.
