Full cast announced for Bare: A Rock Opera

Casting has been announced for the new production of coming-of-age rock musical Bare: A Pop Opera which will debut at The Vaults next month.

Darragh Cowley (Spring Awakening, Hope Mill Theatre, Snow White, London Palladium) will step into the central role of Golden Boy Jason opposite Daniel Mack Shand (The Masters of Mystery, Marlowe Theatre, Rent, Frogmore Paper Mill) as Peter. Lizzie Emery (Rent, Frogmore Paper Mill) takes on the role of Ivy.

One of the stars of the original 1998 Broadway production of Footloose The Musical, X Factor USA finalist Stacy Francis will play Sister Chantelle alongside homegrown talents Jo Napthine (Mamma Mia! Novello Theatre, Made in Dagenham, Adelphi Theatre) as Claire and Mark Jardine (Blood Brothers, West End, Mamma Mia! international tour) in the role of the Priest.

The cast will also include: Tom Hier (Miss Saigon, international tour; Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, UK tour); Bradley Connor (Club Mex, Hope Mill Theatre, Unforgotten, ITV); Athena Collins (West End Live: West End Masterclass); Georgia Bradshaw (Dreamgirls, West End, Flashdance, Korean tour); Beccy Lane (Dick Whittington, Lichfield Garrick Theatre, Cinderella, Camberley Theatre), Tom Scanlon (Kinky Boots, West End, Dirty Dancing, UK tour); and Hollie Ann Lowe (Flashdance, UK and international tour, Annie, West Yorkshire Playhouse). The cast will be completed by Liv Alexander, Georgie Lovatt and Alexander Moneypenny who will all make their professional debuts in the production.

Featuring music by Damon Intrabartolo, lyrics by Jon Hartmere, and a book by Intrabartolo and Hartmere, the story of teenagers exploring identity, faith and body issues while staging a production of Romeo and Juliet at a Catholic boarding school will play the distinctive subterranean arts venue in London’s Waterloo from Friday 21 June until Sunday 4 August.

Commenting on the production earlier this month, the director Julie Atherton said: “I’m so excited to work on this show as I love theatre that challenges archaic ‘one size fits all’ systems and raises important questions. It’s hard to believe that this piece is still so relevant today and that in 2019 (and even in our own theatre community) we are still fighting homophobia.”

The show’s producer Jason Shand-Rodger adds: “This is an incredible show that needs to be seen. We want to create a production that is innovative, dynamic and inspiring, and The Vaults is the perfect setting to allow you to really feel part of this amazing story. With the current uncertainty around the world in relation to human rights and equality it is important these issues are brought to light and that this story is told for people to connect with.”
