Colin Burnicle and Norma Butikofer head the cast of Midnight – A New Musical at the Union Theatre, London
New musical thriller Midnight is receiving its world premiere at London’s Union Theatre this week, nearly three years after the show made its well-received debut in workshop form.
Based on the play Citizens of Hell by leading Azerbaijani writer Elchin, Midnight – A New Musical features a book and lyrics by Timothy Knapman and music and lyrics by Laurence Mark Wythe.
Directed by Kate Golledge (Superhero UK tour and National Youth Music Theatre) and commissioned and produced by Sanan Aliyev for new company Debunk Theatre, the first full production of the show opens this week and continues until 29 September.
Set in Baku, Azerbaijan on New Year’s Eve 1937, Midnight tells the story of a husband and wife facing an uncertain and potentially terrifying future in a police state ruled by the iron fist of dictator Joseph Stalin.
Colin Burnicle (Elf The Musical, Theatre Royal Plymouth and The Lowry) and Norma Butikofer (Retreat, Little Piece of Gold, Southwark Playhouse) play the central couple, listed as Man and Woman.
They are joined by Leon Scott (Honk! The Union) as The Visitor and an ensemble that includes Ashley Daniels, Melanie Maggiore, Tilly-Mae Millbrook and Luke Thornton.
Writers Knapman and Wythe previously worked together on Danny Hero, the Perfect Pitch Musicals’ winner for the people of Corby and GROWL! – The True Story Of The Big Bad Wolf which is being workshopped by the National Youth Music Theatre next month.
