The cast of Gotta Sing Gotta Dance perform every West End show in three minutes at the Devonshire Park Theatre, Eastbourne and on tour
Gotta Sing Gotta Dance continues at the Devonshire Park Theatre, Eastbourne until 24 August and then tours the UK until 25 October.
Where else do you get to see the whole West End in three minutes? Cleverly designed, that very funny sequence is one of many gems from the ever enjoyable revue Gotta Sing Gotta Dance which blew me away back in the summer of 1999 in Eastbourne.
For this new incarnation from Chris Jordan Productions, the cast is top-notch. Simon Adkins, fresh from Viva Forever!, David McMullan (a great dancer with a lovely smile and a moving voice, especially during a beautifully arranged Sondheim medley), Adam Rhys-Charles (Top Hat, White Christmas), Alison Dormer – spectacular, particularly in the wonderful number ‘If’ from Two On the Aisle, Lucinda Lawrence, Rebecca Lesewski, and even offstage Michelle White, all work very hard in this non-stop show which must be gruelling to execute but much fun also, fun the audience is sharing in buckets.
It’s also good for once to have a musical revue covering Broadway, the West End and the golden age of Hollywood, as well as having an emphasis on both song and dance, not just one or the other. Tap dance especially is an important and vital part of the show and indeed rarely do we get such great tap numbers as the duet to ‘I Got Rhythm’.
The direction is by Chris Jordan and the often Fosse-influenced choreography from Nick Winston is intriate, cleverly done and brilliantly executed. In addition to a fair share of song and dance, there is also a dose of comedy, especially in the British versus American musicals section. ‘You Gotta Get a Gimmick’ from Gypsy is another stand-out.
