Giles Terera will reprise his Olivier Award-winning performance as Aaron Burr in the West End production of Hamilton for six weeks from 17 December 2021.
Terera (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, National Theatre, The Book of Mormon, Prince of Wales Theatre) will step back into the production at the Victoria Palace Theatre to replace the musical’s current Aaron Burr, Simon-Anthony Rhoden (The Color Purple, Leicester Curve) after the actor sustained an injury.
With Rhoden due to return to the role at a date to be announced, Terera will remain in the production until 30 January 2022. During the period Jay Perry will play Aaron Burr on Thursdays.
Announcing Terera’s return, Cameron Mackintosh said: “I am delighted that Giles was free to return to the role he brilliantly originated when Hamilton first opened in London and I’m very grateful to him for stepping in for Simon-Anthony who sadly recently sustained an injury.
“It will be wonderful to have Giles back in the room where it happens and we of course wish Simon-Anthony a very speedy recovery and look forward to having him back in the show.”
Earmarked by Mackintosh as the perfect production to launch his multi-million-pound refurbishment of the Victoria Palace Theatre Lin-Manuel Miranda’s hip-hop flavoured show was one of 2017’s most eagerly-anticipated West End premieres. The production lived up to all expectations and went on to win seven Oliviers including the award for Best New Musical.
Hamilton resumed performances at the Victoria Palace Theatre in August this year.
Based on Ron Chernow’s biography of Alexander Hamilton, the musical which has a book, music and lyrics by Miranda is directed by Thomas Kail. Choreography is by Andy Blankenbuehler with musical direction and orchestrations by Alex Lacamoire, scenic design by David Korins, costume design by Paul Tazewell, lighting design by Howell Binkley, sound design by Nevin Steinberg and hair and wig design by Charles G. Lapointe.
Heavily tipped from its Broadway opening night as a major awards winner, Hamilton banked the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the 2016 Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album before adding a stunning 11 Tony Awards including the award for Best Musical to its trophy cabinet. Miranda’s tale of one of America’s founding fathers debuted Off-Broadway in February 2015 where it secured the piece’s first gong, the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical.
Hamilton is produced by Jeffrey Seller, Sander Jacobs, Jill Furman, The Public Theater and Cameron Mackintosh.
