Heathers The Musical continues at the Waterside Theatre, Aylesbury until 3 June 2023 and then tours until 28 October 2023.

Star rating: five stars

Just in time for the half term holidays, the cult classic Heathers The Musical makes its bold entrance at the Waterside Theatre this week. Based on the 1988 film of the same name, which starred a fresh-faced Winona Ryder and Christian Slater, the queues outside the theatre and the standing ovation during the final applause were evidence enough of the popularity of this award-winning show.

If you’re one of the few yet to hear what Heathers is about, then I suggest you keep it that way. The plot is easy to follow and much more thrilling if the surprises are unexpected. Without spoiling the show, the premise of the storyline follows 17-year-old Veronica Sawyer (Jenna Innes) as she attempts to survive her senior year at Westerberg High. A chance encounter with mean girl clique, the Heathers (Verity Thompson, Elise Zavou and Billie Bowman) introduces Veronica to a whole new world where she becomes the centre of attention at school rather than a nobody that’s trying her best to avoid the bullies. Everything is going smoothly until JD (Jacob Fowler) enters the scene, stealing her heart and morals, as the show takes a dark turn.

With a killer soundtrack that will be stuck in your head for days, the show is a gripping watch from start to finish, full of plenty of drama, comedy and theatrical pizzazz. The cast looks like they’re having the time of their life on stage, with every member – from lead to ensemble – acting, dancing and singing to the highest level. It’s difficult to pinpoint just one standout performance, but my personal favourite was Thompson as the head of the Heathers. She perfectly projects pantomime villain vibes, with plenty of sass, confidence and stage presence.

The 1980s outfits are very High School Musical meets Clueless with lots of bright colours, tartan and knee-high socks. Combined with the bold set, it’s hard to take your eyes off the stage. The live band, led by musical director Will Joy, is the icing on the cake. In every shape and form, it’s a show not to be missed. For teens upwards due to the language and sexual references, I’d highly recommend purchasing tickets for some infectious fun at the theatre. Heathers The Musical is a show you could see again and again without boredom becoming an issue.
