Director Jonathan O’Boyle’s critically-acclaimed 50th-anniversary production of the classic rock musical Hair will take to the road in 2019.
Following a successful transfer run at London venue The Vaults in 2017, the award-winning Hope Mill Theatre production of the cult show which captured the vibrancy of the youth movement in 1960s America will open at the New Wimbledon Theatre on 22 March 2019.
The tour will visit Cheltenham, Manchester, Cardiff, Plymouth, Birmingham, Sunderland, Dartford, Liverpool, Portsmouth, Edinburgh, Oxford, Sheffield, Brighton and Milton Keynes. Further dates will be announced at a later date.
The second London transfer resulting from the partnership between the Manchester theatre space and London arts producer Aria Entertainment, Hair followed the Off-Broadway love story Yank! which played the Charing Cross Theatre in 2017.
Hair is produced by Katy Lipson for Aria Entertainment, Ollie Rosenblatt for Senbla, Hope Mill’s co-owners Joseph Houston and William Whelton and associate producer Guy James.
The show’s creative team includes musical director Gareth Bretherton, choreographer William Whelton, with set and costume design by Maeve Black, lighting design by Ben M Rogers and sound design by Calum Robinson. The production will be cast by Jane Deitch.
With a book and lyrics by James Rado and Gerome Ragni and music by Galt MacDermot, Hair opened Off-Broadway in 1967. The hippie rock musical moved on to Broadway and arrived in London’s West End a year later. The show’s most recent Broadway revival was in 2009 with a West End revival in 2010.
